Eco-Friendly Painting & Decorating

Decorating Naturally is an eco friendly environmentally responsible decorating business covering Bedfordshire, Bucks, Northants and Herts.

It's all about caring. Caring about quality, our planet and the people we share it with.

We can't solve all the problems all of the time but we can, if we are prepared to make the effort, do our part in preserving quality of life for future generations and improving our own health along the way through a continuous search for better products and by working with companies with a real sense of responsibility.

That's what Decorating Naturally is about. A painter making the effort. Making a start. Making things better for everyone.

There's still a long way to go but a small step forward is infinately better than standing still!

Covid-19 Update

At the moment, in order to keep everyone safe,  we need to be aware of risks involved in decorating work.  Outside painting and work in empty houses is obviously a bit easier to do but as long as distancing is possible, then interior jobs can be considered.

We are happy to try and give quotes based on photographs if it's easier, and then discuss the most effective way to carry out the work.  So please feel free to get in touch if there is something you would like to plan.

Decorating Naturally?

Over the years we have all been happy to use products without really thinking about their impact on us and the environment - as long as they did the job that was enough right?

The paint in your home is likely to contain all kinds of nasty chemicals - particularly oil based paints. Not all of these chemicals go away when the paint is dry and can have an affect on the wellbeing of people living in the house without them even knowing.

So what's the alternative? Recent EU regulations limit the level of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) so things are improving. However, most low VOC paints are made with acrylic so although they are less toxic, they are far from sustainable in environmental terms since acrylic is a petro-chemical product.

The answer, as far as we're concerned, is to search for reliable, quality paint products made from natural ingredients - preferably from a renewable source. The solution isn't straighforward but every small step takes us closer to the goal.

The Solution

It's easy to fall in the trap of thinking any paint that is labelled as non toxic is a good thing. There's a lot on the market claiming to be that - water-based they may be but they still use acrylics so in other words they are saying eating plastic won't harm you!

Given a choice we prefer to use all natural paint - products that don't include harmful or synthetic chemicals. More and more of these natural paints are appearing on the market and they don't necessarily cost more than trade quality synthetic paints. So going 'eco' doesn't need to be expensive.  And if you need some wallpapering - whilst we can't do much about the inks on the wallpaper, we can use natural paste to put it up.

But natural paints have other advantages. When they have a significal smell it's pleasant and not overpowering like the fumes from traditional oil based products. Once it's on the wall, woodwork or upcycled furniture, it stays cleaner - no plastic so no static to attract dust.

And talking of dust, we use a dust-free sanding system so there's less mess, less dust floating in the air and less cleaning up. If you care about the environment you need a reliable and polite painter and decorator who is also committed to a better world.
